Pretrial and Probation: Compare and Contrast
Tuesday, January 24
10:15 a.m. to 11: 15 a.m. EST
Many pretrial programs reside within county probation departments, yet these fields differ operationally and philosophically. Understanding the fundamental differences between pretrial supervision and probation is critical. Probation holds people accountable after conviction. People receiving pretrial services are presumed innocent, and the focus is on reasonably assuring that they will return to court and remain arrest-free while they await the resolution of their cases. The training will cover the differences and similarities between pretrial and probation—the definitions, goals, and measurable outcomes—and why it is important to understand them. Learn more.

Supportive Services for Pretrial Clients
Monday, January 30
2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. CST
Criminal legal system and community partners increasingly recognize that most people released pretrial appear for their court hearings and remain law-abiding. Accordingly, many pretrial services operations have wisely shifted their supervision model to prioritize and focus on supportive services rather than on surveillance. This training will provide pretrial services staff (directors, supervisors, and officers) with evidence-based and practical ways to support people with need-based services. Learn more.

Communicating Effectively About Pretrial Justice, and More
Monday, February 6
10:15 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. CST
How we describe our work, its guiding principles, and the people we serve impacts public and stakeholder understanding and support. This session will introduce participants to the language of pretrial justice, how it is evolving, and how it overlaps with the language of other criminal legal fields. This session will help leaders talk about their work in a way that attracts new allies and builds a larger constituency for fair, effective pretrial policies and practices. Participants will be introduced to the concept of framing and learn about the dominant ways Americans think about the criminal legal system. Participants will also learn about specific strategies designed to navigate potentially unproductive ways of communicating about pretrial improvements. This session supports communication with system stakeholders, policymakers, the broader public, and the media. Learn more.
