Advancing Pretrial Policy and Research is pleased to offer a free virtual training on pretrial justice communication. This workshop will discuss opportunities for ongoing, proactive communication and principles for effective communication. The training will be held on Wednesday, April 6, from 1 to 4 p.m. ET. The deadline to register is Wednesday, March 16.
About the Training
Communication is a valuable and powerful tool to build trust and foster support for research-based pretrial improvement. But too often, the public and media lack the information they need to understand how pretrial systems work. When people don’t feel informed, they may make assumptions and spread inaccurate information.
This training will help participants consider who they want to reach to increase understanding of pretrial justice. It will provide examples of proactive, ongoing communication activities to inform system stakeholders, community members, and the media. It will also explain common challenges to communicating pretrial justice topics and share key principles to hold more productive conversations.
This training will be helpful to all system and community stakeholders who serve as spokespeople or may need to communicate about the pretrial system. This includes pretrial services directors, those leading pretrial improvement efforts, public information officers, communications staff, community outreach staff, and anyone else who engages in education, outreach, and media relations.
Learning Objectives
Participants can expect the following by the end of the training:
- Understand the value of communicating about your pretrial system
- Learn key principles to communicate effectively
- Begin to identify communication activities to reach important audiences
