Information For Lawmakers

As the most common entry point into the pretrial system, law enforcement’s role in pretrial advancement is substantial.

Decisions made by law enforcement typically determine whether and how a person enters the pretrial legal system. These include whether to issue a summons or citation, connect someone to supportive services, or make a custodial arrest. The choices made upon initial contact with law enforcement have long-lasting consequences for people, systems, and community safety. In collaboration with other system and community stakeholders, law enforcement plays a critical role in advancing pretrial justice.
