Rural Pretrial Justice Fellowship Opportunity

APPR is excited to announce a new nine-month Rural Pretrial Practitioners Fellowship. This new initiative is designed to support and enhance the skills and knowledge of pretrial professionals working in rural communities.

This innovative program will provide participants with specialized training, resources, and networking opportunities to address the unique challenges of advancing pretrial practices in rural jurisdictions. The fellowship culminates with participants attending (at APPR’s expense) the National Association of Pretrial Services Agencies (NAPSA) Annual Conference and Training Institute in September 2024.

About the Fellowship

The APPR Rural Pretrial Practitioners Fellowship will commence in January 2024. The program will include: 

  • Monthly virtual training sessions on relevant pretrial topics, led by APPR staff and other pretrial experts and practitioners
  • Technical assistance from APPR staff
  • Being matched with a seasoned rural pretrial professional, who will mentor you throughout the fellowship
  • Access to a special section on the APPR Learning online workspace
  • Membership in a network of rural pretrial peers
  • Participation in a workshop at the 2024 NAPSA conference
  • Sponsored attendance at the 2024 NAPSA conference

The topics covered during the fellowship will be tailored to the unique needs and challenges of rural pretrial agencies, including:

  • Pretrial community and stakeholder engagement in a rural setting
  • Mapping your pretrial system, identifying available resources, and clarifying the community’s needs
  • Preparing an overview of the jailed population
  • Pretrial decision making
  • Enhancing pretrial supervision and supportive services in rural communities
  • Understanding the importance of pretrial data collection and reporting
  • Pretrial strategic planning: growing your rural pretrial agency

Space is limited to no more than six (6) people. To apply, please complete the APPR Rural Pretrial Justice Fellowship Application.

Application Criteria:

  • Must currently work in an executive/leadership position with responsibility for pretrial services in a rural jurisdiction
  • Must have the endorsement of at least one of your jurisdiction’s judicial officers
  • Must make a good faith effort during the fellowship period to implement material learned regarding pretrial best practices in your local jurisdiction
  • Must intend to fully participate in this opportunity and make a good faith effort to complete all activities/assignments, attend and actively participate in webinars and discussions, and complete other fellowship requirements
  • Must agree to complete periodic evaluations during the program and upon completion

Deadlines and Review of Applications

The deadline for application submission is October 31, 2023. All applications will be acknowledged. APPR staff may contact the applicant for further information if needed.
