Intimate Partner Violence Glossary

Terms and definitions to help pretrial practitioners understand the words and phrases associated with intimate partner violence.

The word glossary from a dictionary.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) refers to violence perpetrated by a partner in a romantic or dating relationship. Statistics show that while all genders experience this form of violence, women face higher rates with more severe lethal and near-lethal outcomes compared to other genders. So it’s crucial that staff working in pretrial services understand the meaning of the language they use. Their words can support survivor safety—and for the people they monitor, those words can encourage law-abiding behavior, compliance with pretrial release conditions, and court attendance.
